A Layered Implementation of the Parallel Functional Language Eden
نویسندگان
چکیده
High-level control over parallel process behaviour simplifies the development of parallel software substantially by freeing the programmer from low-level process management details. The latter are handled by a sophisticated runtime system which controls program execution. In this paper we look behind the scenes and show how the enormous gap between high-level parallel language constructs and their low-level implementation has been bridged in the implementation of the parallel functional language Eden. The main idea has been to concentrate the process control in a functional module and to restrict the extensions of the low-level runtime system to a few selected primitive operations.

Explicit and implicit parallel functional programming: concepts and implementation
This thesis investigates the relation between the two conflicting goals of explicitness and abstraction, for the implementation of parallel functional languages and skeletons. Necessary and useful coordination features for implementing parallel coordination in a functional implementation language will be identified, leading to the proposal of a Haskell extension for explicit low-level coordinat...
متن کاملEden - Parallel Functional Programming with Haskell
Eden is a parallel functional programming language which extends Haskell with constructs for the definition and instantiation of parallel processes. Processes evaluate function applications remotely in parallel. The programmer has control over process granularity, data distribution, communication topology, and evaluation site, but need not manage synchronisation and data exchange between proces...
متن کاملParallel Coordination Made Explicit in a Functional Setting
We present a low-level coordination language for Haskell which can be used as an implementation language for parallel Haskell extensions. It has been developed in the context of the latest Eden implementation (based on the Glasgow-Haskell-Compiler, GHC, version 6) and it is thus referred to as the “EDen Implementation language”, EDI. EDI provides a small set of directly implemented primitive op...

We describe PARADISE (PARAllel DIstribution Simulator for Eden) a simulator developed to proole the execution of programs written in the parallel functional programming language Eden BLOMP96], BLOMP97]. Eden extends the lazy functional language Haskell by syntactic constructs to explicitly deene processes. Paradise is a substantial modiication of GranSim HLP94], Loi96], Loi98], a tool to study ...
